The LSC dashboard has an option to detect mac addresses that are trying to connect to the system, but their MAC address is not in the dashboard.
This can help the sometimes frustrating task of trying to locate the MAC address on a device.
NOTE: If your property does not have a dedicated Guest (e.g. CoWorkName-Guest) network, using this function will block guest from authenticating/roaming while the detection is running. It does not affect guests that are already connected.
Here is how it works.
Start by getting the device you are trying to add ready.
For example, if this is a printer, power it on and get familiar with the menu structure for how to join the printer to a WiFi network.
The network you will need to join the printer into is usually called either CoWorkName-Devices, CoWorkName-General or CoWorkName-Legacy, but it may be different at your property. In all cases you are connecting the new device to the network you usually use when connecting a device by MAC address.
In the next step you will receive a WiFi key for the device and you will have 5 minutes to enter it and connect to the network.
Now that you have the device ready, lets get a key for it:
- Access the "Users" menu in the LSC dashboard
- Select "Auto MAC".
- Select the Network you are adding a device to.
- Select the package you want to add the device to (e.g. if this is a printer for a company, select the company package).
- Click "Get Wifi Key"
The next screen will show you the key you need to enter on the device and how much longer you have to complete the task.
Now connect the device to the WiFi network and enter the key shown your dashboard (not the one in the screenshot above).
When you have entered the key on the device, go back to your dashboard. It should now show one or more devices that have tried to connect. If you dont have a dedicated Guest network there can be quite a few.
Find the row where the manufacturer matches the device and click the + in the same line. e.g. if this is an AppleTV you are adding chances are the "Manufacturer" will be Apple, if it is an HP printer, it will likely say HP.
Once the process completes, the device is mapped and your tenant can use it.
Problems:
If the device is not showing up, check if the MAC address is already have been added to the dashboard. Known MAC addresses will never end up in the list.
Since we dont know the MAC address, check all mappings for the tenant network, chances are there is an old entry marked e.g. "printer" or "appleTV in lobby" etc. If that is the case, simply give them the existing password.
